TLC for trees

The benefit of trees

Trees reduce stress levels and stimulate the senses of sight and smell. They are ecologically essential for the production of oxygen while providing a habitat for wildlife. Trees absorb ozone, carbon, sulphur, and nitrogen dioxides – all harmful pollutants. They also help to filter dust as well as provide a barrier for noise and a degree of protection against hot and cold temperatures.

Money may not grow on trees but the presence of trees can raise property and land prices by some five to ten percent in commercial markets, also adding visual appeal and value to residential gardens.

About Tree Surveys

Surveying the garden

On a small scale a tree survey can simply be taking a look at one or more trees in a garden. Are they healthy or are there signs of insect damage, or disease? Do they have enough room to grow? If not, what needs to happen to improve their chances? Do trees need to be reduced in size because they have outgrown their environment?

Surveying the grounds

Large developments usually implement a tree survey every three years and there are several reasons for that, not least in ensuring the safety of residents. Storm damage for example often requires emergency tree work and that can be expensive. Preventative maintenance of trees can help to avoid those unexpected costs by ensuring trees are healthy and strong enough to stand up to the elements. That means removing damaged branches, attending to the tree crown so that it grows robustly and taking out trees that are dying or weak.

What is a tree survey?

A tree survey is the recognised way of obtaining objective information about trees on any parcel of land. Landowners and property managers have a legal duty to ensure that trees on any part of their land are regularly monitored for safety in order to reduce the risk to people and buildings. A tree survey will determine which trees are to be retained, which should receive remedial work and also which should be removed. With this information, the trees on the site can be effectively managed in the future. The survey is carried out from the ground. However, on some occasions an aerial inspection may also be required which we can provide, if necessary.

What we will do

As tree surgeons in Edinburgh, a good deal of our business is carrying out tree surveys. Firstly, any old tree tags will be carefully removed, should they be present.

We replace them with new, numbered tree tags secured with spring-loaded screws, which allow for annual growth and expansion of the trunk.

The location of each tree is recorded on a master plan.

Detailed report of each tree is recorded and includes the species, age, height and diameter.

A survey will be carried out on each tree and designated as ‘good’, ‘fair’, or ‘poor’ depending on its condition.

Recommendations will be given to include any work requirements and suggestions for replacement planting.

Particular consideration will be given to the foliage which continues to fall and create difficulty for local residents. Practical and economic options will be made available within the report.

Continued assessment

Trees are living, growing organisms and their condition can change significantly and sometimes unpredictably within a few years. Any survey should be viewed as a report of a tree at the time of writing. There will be a continuing requirement to monitor the condition and stability of trees at regular intervals. Tree surveys should be carried out a minimum of annually, but ideally every six months and particularly after high winds, due to the potentially significant risk to people, buildings and vehicles in this area.

Terminology Guide

Crown lift

The removal of lower branches around the base of the tree or up to a natural line. This will result in good definition, thus enhancing the visual appearance of the upper crown.

Crown reduction

Reduces the overall size of the tree but importantly, maintains the natural shape.

Crown thin

The removal of certain branches in order to reduce the density of the crown. This will also aid light enhancement throughout the tree.

Dead wooding

The task of removing dead branches or limbs within the tree. The removal of dead wood results in a tree that is healthy and safe.

Epicormic growth

Epicormic growth refers to shoots growing from  buds around the base of the trunk. Cutting and removing these produces a clean and defined look.

Felling

The removal of the entire tree. We dismantle the tree in a controlled manner using trained climbers and specialised cutting equipment.

Pollard

The process of removing all branches within the tree to leave a bare frame. This maintains the shape of the tree. This effectively results in the control of rapid growth.

Stump grinding

The process of removing the tree stump from the ground. We can reduce the stump to as much as 10 inches below ground level so that the area can then be used to plant, turf or landscape.
